Mikey's Moments > London
A whirlwind three days seeing the sights in London!
image

Here's the kids goofing around while waiting for the next train at Hammersmith Tube station...

image

The Science Museum is huge! Here is one of the main halls. I seem to remember those stacked up cars and the plane when I visited here in the early 1980's...

image

A closer view of the plane. I wonder how often they polish it to keep that shine?

image

We did not have time to visit the whole museum so after playing a bit at a hands-on science exhibit we explored the medical collection. Here is a diorama of life in the trenches for the wounded soldiers in the first world war. Not too pleasant...

image

Another view of the main hall...

image

The next stop was Buckingham Palace and we just caught the changing of the guards - they were just marching away as we got there but I managed to snap one quick shot of them...

image

After a few very gray days the weather changed for us and it turned out to be very hot in London. Here are the kids in front of the palace.

image

This gorgeous statue is a memorial to Queen Victoria. It was sculpted by Sir Thomas Brock and dedicated in 1911.

image

A closeup of the very imposing and ornate front gates to Buckingham Palace. Many a King, Queen, Prince or Princess has gone in and out of these gates...

image

Here we are with a nice view of the Houses Of Parliament clock tower in the background - Big Ben is actually the name of the largest of the bells which are in the clock tower...

image

Here is a statue of Oliver Cromwell outside the Houses of Parliament.

image

By now it was past lunchtime though due to the heat we were thirsty rather than hungry. We found a very small sandwich place and found a cool spot to sit and eat and rest on Parliament Square.

image

Here is a nice view of the London financial district from the outside walkway around the dome at St Paul's Cathedral.

image

Here is a view of the Tower of London where many a King and Queen lost their heads!

image

After walking over Tower Bridge we had a great view of it from right in front of the Tower of London in the last photo.

image

Here is Traitors Gate at the Tower of London - traditionally the traitors were taken to the Tower by boat and brought in through this gate.

image

Here is the London Eye - the London Aquarium is in the building to the right of it, though due to lack of time we were not able to visit there this time.

image

Here are the Houses of Parliament looking very grand in the late evening sun.

image

Last but not least for the day was a ride on the legendary London Eye.

image

Here is an incredible view of, and from, the top of the London Eye...

image

A more general view of a London evening.

image

The London Eye and Aquarium look awesome at night when they are all lit up!

image

If you have watched the Harry Potter movies you will have seen the Night Bus cross Westminster Bridge while taking Harry into London - well here is a photo of it!

image

An eye catching shot of the Westminster sign at the tube station...

image

A portrait of James and Carina as seen in the window of a moving tube train :)

image

Outside our hotel in Hammersmith.

image

For our last stop in London we wanted to take a quick look at the Tower of London. Here is a view of the White Tower which is in the centre of the castle.

image

The Tower of London is a very interesting place but having to carry our heavy bags made it a quite an exhausting experience!

image

Here is a suit of armour from the exhibition at the White Tower. I don't think I could get up, never mind fight in one these!

image

A recreation of Edward I's bedchamber in St Thomas' Tower. It looks quite a cozy place to sleep - much nicer than the dungeons you slept in if you were not in the Kings favour!
