Caerphilly Castle

Mikey's Moments > Caerphilly Castle
A nice castle visit seemed like a good introduction to Wales so we headed out on a typical cool, gray, drizzly British summer day to the lovely town of Caerphilly - famous for its castle and its cheese!
image

Cerphilly Castle is the largest castle in Wales and the second largest in Britain. Here is the very imposing front entrance - once upon a time there would have been a drawbridge here over the moat to keep out unwanted visitors, junk mail etc...

Here is Dad being tour guide and explaining the castles history to Anthony.

This is a very distinctive feature of Caerphilly Castle - this tower was damaged in 1648 when Oliver Cromwell's army attacked the castle. The tower leans even more than the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and has done so for 363 years so far - amazing!

image

Here is a view over the courtyard and Caerphilly town - it is hard to imagine how anyone could sneak up on a castle which commands such a fantastic view! Unless of course they forgot to bring the lookouts their coffee...

image

Here are James and Carina doing a very terrible job of looking like nasty, vicious, blood-thirsty medievel invaders! This is the door out onto the top of the tower after climbing up the stone spiral staircase.

A nice little tower bedroom. Plenty of light from the skylight and the ideally set bay windows allows for an airy and spacious feel to this room whilst deterring potential kidnappers. A perfect room for any princess!

image

Speaking of which... Here is one ready to move in any time... So long as she gets a big four-post bed! :)

Another major selling point for this very desirable property is the en-suite bathroom, which, James assures us, comes with all modern conveniences. Top of the list being the wooden seat guaranteed to keep you from getting too much of a shock on cold mornings!

This is the back of the castle looking across the courtyard. I have to admit that wall looks a bit sad but it must be rather difficult for a distinguished castle such as this to become just a tourist attraction...

image

Here is Anthony practicing his castle invasion skills - still a long way to climb though...

Photographing the photographer :)

Here is another photographer... This one seems to be taking a break. It sure ain't all glamour being castle paparazzi...

So, how deep is a well? Anthony seems determined to find out. Let's hope it's not the hard way - my guess is that it is pretty deep!

Here's a nice shot across the side of the castle.

This swan family was enjoying themselves on the moat around the outside of the castle.

Here is a nice shot of the pretty town of Caerphilly. It will be nice to explore more of the town on another visit.

We finished up our visit with a nice lunch at Morisons Supermarket cafe and then a visit to W.H.Smiths newsagents. Here James and Carina are browsing the latest edition of the Dr Who magazines.
