Mikey's Moments > Seattle
The Summer 2012 road trip was to Seattle in Washington State, with a day in Vancouver, British Columbia. The trip was broken up into two days as the drive was quite long. The first stage was a 400 mile drive to Medford, just over the border into Oregon. The second stage was a 446 mile drive from Medford up to Seattle.

Ready to leave our motel at Medford.

Bright and cheery at 6:00AM!

The wonderful Hampton Inn where we stayed in Tukwila...

A very cloudy early morning view of the Space Needle.

Finding our way around the Seattle Center was a challenge, but with a little determination and a handy map we found our way to the Pacific Science Center!

A huge statue from outside the tomb that is so incredibly lifelike and must have looked amazing 3,335 years ago when it was made.

image

This bed was found in Tutankhamun's tomb and he actually slept on it. It boggles the mind to think this was last slept on way over 3,000 years ago!

This cheeky seagull loved posing with his turtle friends in the courtyard of the Pacific Science Center!

Here is a very cool butterfly in the butterfly house at the Pacific Science Center. They have a beautiful room full of tropical plants and an incredible number and variety of butterflies.

After finishing our tour of the Pacific Science Center it was time to go up to the top of the 605 feet high Space Needle. A short elevator ride took us up to some very spectacular views. Here are Anthony, James and Carina with downtown Seattle in the background.

The Space Needle under a beautiful blue sky.

Here is a lovely view of the waterfront with the mountains of the Olympic National Park in the background.

A view almost south east with the Seattle downtown skyline and the monorail in the foreground.

Here's a view north east over Union Lake.

And to round off our quick tour of Seattle Center here is a late afternoon view of the Space Needle blocking the sun.

image

The Seattle aquarium was very nice to walk around and we enjoyed watching a diver in a huge fish tank near the entrance.

image

While enjoying the outside exhibits we caught sight of our harbour tour ship - the Spirit of Seattle - pulling out. We planned to catch it after lunch.

image

After lunch and a browse of a souvenir shop we lined up to catch our tour.

image

We found a nice spot at the back with four chairs and settled ourselves in for the ride.

image

Here is a nice view of the city and the 175 feet tall ferris wheel on Pier 57 not long after we left. I just realized we did not get around to riding the ferris wheel, which had only opened in June! :(

image

Another view of the city and also the Space Needle.

image

As we cruised by the docks we passed this pair of Coast Guard ships. The one on the left - the USCGC Midgett - last year caught a submarine off the coast of Costa Rica trying to smuggle in millions of dollars worth of cocaine... The ship on the right - the Healy - is an ice breaker.

image

This Coast Guard ship - the Polar Star - is a heavy ice-breaker built in 1976. She helps supply research stations in the polar regions and also carries out scientific research.

After revisiting the gift shop and stopping by Starbucks for a cool drink we headed back up to the Westlake Center to catch the light rail back. The terminal walls were very colourfully decorated!
